Bike Share

Posted by admin 27 Jul, 2008

Recently, “bike sharing” has been widely discussed as a sustainable transportation alternative. Bike-sharing exists in cities such as Paris, which has over 10,000 bikes at 750 stations, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Oslo, Brussels, Berlin, Copenhagen, Toronto, Seattle, Portland, and New York. Bike sharing is popping up all over the country with many cities, Universities, and businesses considering and implementing this simple solution for local sustainable transportation.

The Green Bike Share pilot project is being launched this Fall 2008 semester and will introduce a fleet of 20 custom commuter bicycles that will expand with demand.  For $15 students, faculty, and staff will be able to check-out bicycles for up to 48 hours at a time.  We will be integrating e-based technology sometime in the Spring 2009 semester that will introduce a new style of bike sharing to the world (more on this to come).
IgnitePhilly’s  Johnny Brenda recently brought together a variety of speakers who talked about inspiring ideas and projects that they are working on including an interesting bicycle advocacy group called Bike Share Philadelphia.

We have run a bike share organization on a small scale for the past two years. We will have our regular meeting this Thursday (Sep 11) at 12:30p.m. at the Transportation Library on the 4th Floor of McLaughlin Hall. Please join us if you can. We would very much like to hear about your experience. Thank you.

I’m interested in starting a bike share in my community; Willits Cal. It’s about 260 mi. north of SF on the 101. I was hoping to get some info about how to make this happen and how you made it happen.
